Внехромосомные элементы ДНК, представляющие собой малые по сравнению с хромосомой, замкнутые в кольцо двухцепочечные ДНК. Информация, содержащаяся в плазмидах, обычно не является жизненно необходимой для клеток. Плазмиды могут использоваться в качестве векторов для клонирования.
